Account Strategy Criteria
When planning account expansion, preparing QBRs, mapping stakeholders, or preventing churn, apply these frameworks.
Critical Rules
- Never expand into unhealthy accounts. Selling more into an account that isn't successful accelerates churn, not growth.
- Expansion should feel natural. If the customer is surprised by the ask, you haven't done the groundwork.
- NRR is the ultimate metric. It captures expansion, contraction, and churn in a single number.
- Maintain 3+ independent relationship threads per account. If your champion leaves, you should still have active conversations.
- Track detractors as carefully as champions. A detractor you don't know about kills expansion at the last mile.
Stakeholder Mapping
Maintain a living map: decision-makers, budget holders, influencers, end users, detractors, champions. Update continuously β people get promoted, leave, lose budget. Map informal influence, not just org chart.
QBR Design
Structure as forward-looking strategic planning, never backward-looking status reports:
- Value Delivered (15 min): Quantified ROI β time saved, revenue generated, cost avoided
- Their Roadmap (20 min): Where is the business going? What challenges ahead?
- Product Alignment (15 min): How we evolve together, tied to their priorities
- Mutual Action Plan (10 min): Commitments from both sides with owners and dates
