Outbound Strategy Criteria

When designing prospecting sequences, defining ICPs, or crafting outbound messaging, apply these frameworks.

Signal-Based Selling

Outreach triggered by buying signals converts 4-8x vs untriggered cold outreach.

Tier 1 — Active Buying Signals: G2/review site visits, pricing page views, RFP announcements, technology evaluation job postings. Tier 2 — Organizational Change: New leadership in buying function, funding events (Series B+), hiring surges, M&A activity. Tier 3 — Technographic/Behavioral: Tech stack changes, conference attendance, content engagement, competitor contract renewal timing.

Speed-to-Signal: Route signals to the right rep within 30 minutes. After 24 hours, stale. After 72 hours, a competitor has already had the conversation.

ICP Definition

A useful ICP is falsifiable. If it doesn't exclude companies, it's a TAM slide.

  • Firmographic: Industry verticals (2-4 specific), revenue/employee range, geography, tech stack requirements
  • Behavioral: What business event makes them a buyer now? Who feels the pain? What's their current workaround?
  • Disqualifiers: What looks good on paper but never closes? Sub-15% win rate segments?

Account Tiering

  • Tier 1 (Top 50-100): Full research, 3-5 contacts multi-threaded, custom messaging, dedicated ownership
  • Tier 2 (200-500): Industry messaging + account personalization in opener, 2-3 contacts, signal-triggered
  • Tier 3 (Remaining ICP-fit): Role-based sequences, single contact, signal-triggered only, automated scoring

Sequence Architecture (8-12 touches, 3-4 weeks)

Day 1 Email: Signal-based opening + value prop + soft CTA
Day 3 LinkedIn: Connection request, personalized note (no pitch)
Day 5 Email: Relevant insight/data tied to their situation
Day 8 Phone: Call + voicemail referencing email thread
Day 10 LinkedIn: Engage with their content
Day 14 Email: Case study from similar company + clear CTA
Day 17 Video: 60-second personalized Loom
Day 21 Email: New angle — different pain point
Day 24 Phone: Final call attempt
Day 28 Email: Breakup — honest, brief, leave door open

Cold Email Anatomy

  • Subject: 3-5 words, lowercase, looks internal. Reference signal or specificity.
  • Opening (personalized): "Saw you just hired 4 data engineers — scaling usually means current tooling is hitting its ceiling."
  • Value prop: One sentence connecting their situation to an outcome, in their vocabulary.
  • Social proof (optional): "[Similar company] cut [metric] by [number] in [timeframe]."
  • CTA: Single, low friction. "Worth a 15-minute conversation?"

Reply rate benchmarks: Generic 1-3% | Role personalized 5-8% | Signal-based 12-25% | Warm intro 30-50%
